2020 season

2020 season postponed until further notice

Dear members,

The committee met on Tuesday 17 March 2020 to discuss the recent implications of the government imposing restrictions on the size of events and importantly social distancing to limit the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19).

A large number of sporting, music and theatre events have been cancelled or postponed due to COVID-19 with the government advising ‘against static, non-essential mass public gatherings of 100 people’. We may expect the government to impose harsher restrictions in the future.

In the interests of the health and safety of all our members, the committee has elected to postpone the start of the 2020 film season.

This means we will be reviewing the options available to commence screening films on the 2 May and extending the season if possible. Naturally this will be subject to any restrictions that are in place at that time.

Currently, we are in discussion with Event Cinemas and film distributors with regard to our contractual obligations.

We are exceptionally disappointed in making this decision, however, it is made in the interest and health of all of our members.

At the moment we are not intending to process any refunds of membership until a final decision is made in late April on the future of this year’s program.

We appreciate your patience and will keep you informed of any changes though email, Newcastle Film Society website and Facebook.

Kind regards,

Paul Harrison
President, Newcastle Film Society
