Animation, Event, Fantasy, Genre , comments closed

Director: Michael Dudok de Wit
Genre: Animation, fantasy
Duration: 80 mins

Studio Ghibli, the legendary Japanese animation house, chose Dudok de Wit as its first European collaborator. Founder, Haya Miyazaki, took a shine to his Father and Daughter which won a short animation Oscar in 2001. This stunning animated fable set on a desert island, creates a world so beautiful the characters need only wander around in it. The Red Turtle details extraordinary moments with animals and the elements but it’s really about the flow of life, embracing its primal glory and persistent melancholy, grasping essential sacrifices and the scarring of mistakes. Dudok de Wit captures an amazing journey of age, experience and responsibility. It’s a sublime picture.

Director: Richard Linklater
Starring: Ethan Hawke, Trevor Jack Brooks, Lorelei Linklater
Genre: Animation, drama
Duration: 101 mins

Watching this film is like eavesdropping on a theoretical discourse between Kierkegaard and Kerouac, while standing in a modern art museum as the paintings come to life and melt into your visual cortex. Director Richard Linklater has created a film that turns the notions of dreaming and reality inside out, both visually and conceptually, while telling an absorbing tale of an off-beat teenage boy trying to wrap his head around a ponderous waking dream from which he can’t escape. The film was shot on digital video then in post-production. Every frame was painted over, lending the final product a surreal artistic and cerebral vitality that is unique in the history of cinema.

An elderly bamboo cutter discovers a magic baby in a stalk of bamboo and brings her home to his wife who raises her as their own. The girl grows quickly and soon has a gaggle of friends with whom she runs wild. However, the bamboo cutter has ambitions and brings his wild child to the capital, where he has her made over into a lady, dubs her Princess Kaguya, and offers her up to the noble class as a bride. Directed by Isao Takahata, who co-founded the legendary Studio Ghibli with Hayao Miyazaki, it is gorgeous and hand-drawn, like a watercolor come to glorious life. The story is based on ‘The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter’, a 10th-century Japanese folk tale. The story has lived for centuries and if ‘The Tale of Princess Kaguya’ is any indication, it will continue to.

Tells the story of two children from the port city of Kobe, made homeless by American bombs. Seita is a young teenager, and his sister Setsuko is about 5. Their father is serving in the Japanese navy, and their mother is a bomb victim. For a time an aunt takes them in, but she’s cruel about the need to feed them, and eventually Seita finds a hillside cave where they can live. Their plight is recorded with unsentimental intimacy in a world where
food and compassion are scarce.

The late film critic Roger Ebert considered it to be one of the best and most powerful war films and, in 2000, included it on his ‘Great Movies’ list.

Director: Hayao Miyazaki

Starring: Hideaki Anno, Jun Kunimura, Mirai Shida, Miori Takimoto, Hidetoshi Nishijima

Genre: Adventure, Animation

Duration: 126 mins

Hayao Miyazaki is one of the most respected animators in history, with an Oscar for “Spirited Away” and a long list of admirers that includes Pixar’s John Lasseter. In what he says will be his last film, Miyazaki presents a semi-fictionalized memoir about Jiro Horikoshi, the inventor of the Mitsubishi A6M Zero Fighter, one of Japan’s chief weapons used in WWII. As a young boy he dreams of becoming a pilot but grows up to become the aircraft engineer who designed the Zero,. The film is rife with melancholy undertones, and with the awareness of where Jiro’s quest will lead. Miyazaki, for his part, is one of the most prominent Japanese public figures to speak out against the country’s imperialist past. Even if the visual spectacle is what sweeps the audience away, its thematic richness is what cuts deepest and lingers longest.
