Paul Verhoeven’s new film is an outrageous black comedy of manners about rape where the actions of its central character Michèle (Isabelle Huppert) are disconcertingly out of step with standard movie-abuse-victim behaviour. When we first see her, she’s pinned to the floor of her living room, being violated by an anonymous man in a ski mask. Michèle mentally returns to this scene time and again throughout the film and Verhoeven never compromises the bruising, visceral horror of the attack. However, her instinctive reaction isn’t to despair. It’s to sweep up the broken glass, have a bath and move on. Following the rape, she tells a few close friends and as her refusal to call the police becomes understandable, Michèle grows increasingly suspicious of the men in her life.
