Gillian Armstrong directed this adaptation of Peter Carey’s 1988 Booker Prize-winning novel. In a lengthy flashback, Oscar Hopkins’ great grandson (Geoffrey Rush) narrates the family history that led to his birth. The lives of his grandparents (Ralph Fiennes and Cate Blanchett), two 19th century eccentrics driven by faith and temptation, form a love story of enchantment and wicked wit. Gorgeously photographed by Geoffrey Simpson (Shine), it offers a steady supply of visual surprises within compositions suitable for framing.
